From organizing nannies on New York City playgrounds 15 years ago, NDWA has built a powerful movement, gained incredible local and federal policy victories, and shifted the national conversation on domestic workers. All of this was possible by centering and caring for the needs, dignity, and essential humanity of one of the most essential, yet invisible working communities — domestic workers.
Now, we are propelling towards the future with big, bold ideas and an ambitious agenda. The 15th Anniversary will uplift the movement this community created and build on the momentum of recent wins to propel our vision for shared progress into the future.
The Future is Us – Celebrating 15 years of NDWA
On September 16, our members, partners, allies and supporters convened in Washington D.C. for a joyful celebration of the strength and leadership of our worker members and the transformative partnerships that made 15 years of impact possible.
Our celebration included interactive experiences like a visual timeline composed of images and videos from the past 15 years, musical performances and awards to honor the champions who helped to grow our movement from conversations on a playground into a powerful political force.
If you were unable to attend the celebration, be sure to watch the full recorded livestream and celebrate the work and the wins that NDWA has achieved over the last 15 years, all while setting the stage for big dreams, bold visions, and bright futures ahead.
The 2022 National Congress took place from September 17 to 18 in Washington, DC. The Congress brough together 150 representatives from each of NDWA’s local affiliates and chapters, members of our national Worker Councils and our Board of Directors from across the country in order to strengthen our strategies to transform domestic work and affirm our vision and priorities for the next 5 years. Over the two days, we rolled up our sleeves to strategize and chart a path forward for our alliance.
We assessed the impacts of our core strategies like winning Domestic Workers Bills of Rights, enforcing our rights and building new forms of collective worker voice. We shared reflections and new ideas of how to make these strategies even more effective. We identified ways we can coordinate better as a national network of powerful local organizations. And we discussed our national campaign priorities, reflecting on what we’ve been able to win together and setting our sights on even more ambitious gains for our sector.
Throughout the weekend, domestic worker leaders got us fired up, energized and inspired! And we were joined by leaders from allied movements who shared their perspectives on the current political and economic landscape, and on the unique roles that NDWA is uniquely suited to play.
Finally, we engaged in one of the most important practices of building a worker-led movement: the election of domestic workers to serve on NDWA’s Board of Directors. NDWA’s Board is composed of four representatives from our Affiliate Organizations and Chapters, three representatives from our Worker Councils, three allies and one staff representative. At the Congress, we held a candidates’ forum where worker leaders running for election made eloquent and impassioned speeches about their vision for our movement and desire to serve on the Board. Then our Chapters and Affiliates voted to elect the organizations and worker leaders who will serve on the Board for the next two years.
Here are a few ways to get involved:
Invest in domestic workers and help sustain our movement to reimagine a future that we all deserve.
