National Domestic Workers Alliance Statement on Midterm Elections

NEW YORK – This election season, we witnessed record-breaking turnout through election day, and domestic workers showed up for our democracy. This year, the National Domestic Workers Alliance reminded domestic workers that voting is a critical tool to make a difference for our families and our future, to protect what matters to us, and reject what will harm us.

National Domestic Workers Alliance Executive Director Jenn Stowe and President Ai-jen Poo issued the below joint-statement today:

“NDWA is an alliance representing close to 2.5 million domestic workers who are majority women of color. This year, women of color turned out in critical races across the nation to protect our rights and democracy. NDWA built decisive coalitions that ensured voters made their voices heard on the ground and in the states.

This election made one thing clear: we must double down on efforts to build a multi-racial, multilingual and multi-generational coalition of women. The power we have built over 15 years among Black, AAPI, Latinx and Native women workers shows that NDWA is uniquely positioned to lead this work. This strategy bucks “conventional wisdom” about what it takes to secure lasting victories for workers. But until we are able to change the way we support and value women in our economy and in our democracy, including our ability to make decisions about our lives and care for the people we love, we will double down on it.

We will continue to count every vote in Arizona and Nevada. For our democracy to work for all of us, every voter must have their voice heard and their vote counted. We believe in the power of the millions who made a plan, overcame targeted voter suppression and turned out in record numbers. We know that the issues women and women of color care about will continue to motivate voters and we will continue moving toward our vision of a nation that values care and protects care work.”
