WASHINGTON – The National Domestic Workers Alliance released the following statement in response to the White House’s $16 billion child-care funding request to Congress.
“The National Domestic Workers Alliance welcomes and applauds the White House’s announcement of a $16 billion supplemental budget request to Congress for child care. Since the expiration of pandemic-era childcare relief funding at the end of September, as many as 1 in 3 child-care centers could face closure – potentially leaving as many as 3.2 million children and their families without childcare and threatening to impact working mothers and caregivers, who now face the reality of leaving the workforce to care for their families. The latest White House request would provide critical funding to support families and the economy.
The ongoing care crisis has forced families and child-care workers to navigate uncertain territory; care workers face the threat of unemployment and loss of wages, while families confront the consequences of losing care for their children, ultimately leaving many working parents with the difficult choice between child care and their livelihoods. The care crisis impacts everyone in the country, but it especially affects domestic workers who care for their own families while caring for our homes, loved ones, and communities.
Congress must act to ensure working families have access to affordable, accessible, and high-quality care for all because no family should endure such uncertainty in accessing the care they deserve.”
