DENVER, CO – Jeanette Vizguerra, a mother, grandmother, and community leader, has always wanted what all mothers want – safety for her family, herself, and her loved ones. On March 17, the long-time National Domestic Workers Alliance member, former SEIU member and 2017 TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People recipient, recognized for her deep commitment to fight for workers’ rights, was detained by ICE outside of her job. She now faces deportation to Mexico, which would separate her from her family and children, whose roots are in the U.S.
The National Domestic Workers Alliance released the following statement:
“As a pillar in her Colorado community for nearly 30 years, Jeanette has tirelessly supported immigrant and domestic worker families, inspiring many to courageously stand up for their rights – whether it’s speaking out against labor violations or family separation, or advocating for better wages and benefits for workers. Her strength, bravery, and resilience underscore the urgent need to protect our communities from increased criminalization and deportation threats.
We are clear: Abducting people from their communities, in front of their jobs, or from the place they call home, harms every one of us. These attacks are meant to provoke fear and silence us – they are an all-out assault on our families, and our right to live safe, dignified lives. And we will not turn away from this fight: Jeanette Vizguerra deserves to be home safely with her family and community, not detained and facing the uncertainty and cruelty of deportation.
We will not allow our communities to be torn apart. NDWA and the women we represent are rooted in generational strength, courage, and solidarity to protect each other and uphold a vision of justice, dignity, and care. When one of us is targeted, all of us are at risk. This is not just about Jeanette, nor just about domestic workers—it is about the fundamental freedoms that bind our communities together. The latest attacks on our communities are meant to sow fear and instability among neighbors. We will not allow our communities to be torn apart, or our friends, neighbors and loved ones to be terrorized.”
